Patrick touts Huckabee endorsement

Sen. Dan Patrick said Tuesday he’s snagged the endorsement of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in his bid for the seat held by Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst.

Huckabee last year endorsed Dewhurst in his U.S. Senate race, which he lost to now-Sen. Ted Cruz. Dewhurst has said he’ll run for re-election.

In a statement released by Patrick, R-Houston, Huckabee said:

“I’m proud to endorse Dan Patrick for Lieutenant Governor because Dan Patrick is an authentic conservative leader with a proven record of fighting for life, border security, tax reform and less government spending and debt.

Dan Patrick shares our values, is a committed Christian and has successfully passed laws to defend life and honor God in the Texas Senate and Texas state pledge.

It’s often said that Lieutenant Governor is the most influential position in Texas state government. I can think of no one better to serve as the next Lieutenant Governor of Texas and lead on the issues that matter most to conservatives than my friend Dan Patrick.”

Patrick said, “I’m humbled to have the support of Governor Mike Huckabee, one of the top conservative and pro-life leaders in America, and someone who Texans admire for his conservative convictions and outstanding leadership.”

Huckabee was at a Texas Capitol rally earlier this month to support legislation imposing stricter limits on abortion.

Dewhurst’s staff didn’t have a comment. Dewhurst has been endorsed by the Texas Right to Life PAC, Texas Alliance for Life PAC and leaders of several other anti-abortion groups.
